The Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) has been the nation’s premier provider of Homeland Security education since 2002. Housed within CHDS, the in-residence Executive Education Program offers customized homeland security graduate-level courses for senior-level government and private sector officials on the campus of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. CHDS is seeking a User Experience designer to lead the Digital Experience development team. This designer will create engaging, interactive, digital experiences that help busy people learn effectively. They will be responsible for the quality of human/computer interaction at CHDS. A successful candidate for this role will have 1) a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, 2) excellent visual design skills, 3) great technical know-how, and 4) proven expertise in designing and developing web/digital experiences.


• Conceptualize and develop creative and leading-edge digital learning experiences that promote student engagement and/or help users work more effectively. • Gauge the usability of existing apps and resources, executing constructive changes. • Collaborate with subject matter experts, students, staff and other stakeholders to design, implement and test high impact innovations built on sound design solutions. • Lead the Center’s small, in-house development team of coders and media developers to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality interfaces and materials. • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in UX design, human/computer interaction, UI design, instructional design, and related technology tools. • Follow the user experience through the online environment to understand what works and what doesn’t. This may include A/B testing, user personas, online analytics, evaluations, or similar strategies. • Solve problems, make decisions, and communicate effectively. • Design or influence interfaces for mobile, desktop and web. Create media.


• Applicant must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to pass a background check and obtain a Security Clearance. • Possess a current and valid state driver’s license. • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English proficiently. • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills. • Must be able to lift and carry light loads without encountering any physical limitations.

Skills and Abilities

• Minimum three years of experience designing and developing digital interfaces and/or content, from ideation through implementation. • Strong understanding of design standards and aesthetics in human/computer interaction. • Deep knowledge of web and web-based application design best practices. • Ability to give and take creative direction and lead other designers/developers using agile development, scrum, or your own lean management style. • Experience leading/managing projects requiring technical expertise and demonstrated creativity in analysis and deployment of technology. • Understanding of how design translates to code. Ability to code in HTML, CSS, PHP, and javascript is a plus. • Understanding of how video, audio, motion graphics, infographics, and interactive content contribute to the user experience. Specific experience with media development is a plus. • Experience in developing simulations, learning games, and story-based or problem-based learning experiences is a plus. • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented production environment. • Ability to lead and motivate a small team where all members are hands-on. • Ability and desire to learn advanced concepts in the field of homeland security. • Experience with Wordpress or similar content management systems.
