Summary

CREEK TECHNOLOGIES is seeking a full time, on-site China Subject Matter Expert, Researcher, and Analyst located in Newport, RI. The successful candidate will support education, research and analysis at the graduate level for the US Naval War College. Provides subject matter expertise and performs graduate-level, classified research, primarily using the Mandarin Chinese language, including reading Mandarin Chinese at a very high level of proficiency (ILR 4 or above). Performs work as a researcher, Mandarin translator, and as a social scientist.

Responsibilities

  • Support War Gaming and Research activities. Support the development and execution of NWC research events, including war games, formal lectures, discussions, workshops, or conference proceedings, which integrate material from multiple sources and perspectives into finished products.
  • Provide support to the NWC academic enterprise, including support for curriculum development, curriculum modification, and classroom instruction to assist NWC in its mission to provide students with a better understanding of emerging strategic and operational challenges. Candidate will integrate expertise in China cultural, military, political and economic sectors with colleagues within interdisciplinary area studies centers and groups to teach and enhance educational mission of the college.
  • Provide support to NWC research programs, including: research and analysis support on subjects of current and future concern to the maritime security community. Support the development of new technical and analytic products, utilizing operational research methodologies.
  • Support War Gaming and Research activities. Support the development and execution of NWC research events, including war games, formal lectures, discussions, workshops, or conference proceedings, which integrate material from multiple sources and perspectives into finished products.
  • Support Executive Education programs, which are designed to develop senior naval leaders. This effort will provide research and analysis support for the development of leadership curriculum, including advanced classified planning scenarios.
  • Develop studies and present oral and written reports, discussion papers, research papers and articles on specific analytic issues. These efforts may involve development of studies, surveys, content analysis, data collection and analysis for focus groups, seminars and conferences.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of China's foreign relations, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and with the United States, including an understanding of the drivers, actors, and conduct of China's foreign policy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Chinese security issues, including China's military strategy, how China uses its military to advance its national interests, the capabilities of the People's Liberation Army, and domestic security concerns.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. foreign policy related to China and the Indo-Pacific (including U.S. alliances and other partnerships in the region) and U.S. military strategy, capabilities, and activities in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Broad understanding of the global threat environment with emphasis on the “2+3” as identified in the U.S. National Defense Strategy, e.g., Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and Violent Extremist Organizations.
  • Ability to speak and read Mandarin Chinese, to include ability to effectively utilize sources of electronic and print information.

Education

Graduate degree in a relevant field, such as Asian Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Security Studies, or Asian History

Experience

  • Joint Professional Military Education or experience in joint military operations desired.
  • Experience living and/or working in China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong.
