Opening: Accounting Specialist

We are seeking an Accounting Specialist to join our management team. The Accounting Specialist will review and track expense reports, maintain complete and accurate records, and assist with creating and editing monthly invoices. The ideal candidate will have excellent organization and communication skills, a self-starter mindset, and a general understanding of Microsoft Excel.

The Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) is the Nation’s Homeland Security Educator for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Since 2003, CHDS has conducted a wide range of programs focused on assisting current and emerging leaders in Homeland Defense and Security to develop the policies, strategies, programs and organizational elements needed to defeat terrorism and prepare for and respond to natural disasters and public safety threats across the United States.

• Expense Reports o Review travel and other expense reports for errors o Work with operation coordinators to correct the expense report mistakes o Add expense report data to the appropriate tracker, database and invoice o Assist in the revision of travel policy documents annually • Record Keeping and Supporting Documentation o Digitally file expense reports, invoices, market research, and other documents • Monthly Invoice o Review non-labor line items for errors and omissions o Review full invoice for formula and formatting errors o Assist team members with invoice tasks as required • Support management team with various tasks as necessary o Assist with administrative tasks such as employee onboarding o Compile shipping charges for the month into a consolidated report

Required: • BS/BA Degree required (or near-term graduation). o Subject of study in business, finance, economics or accounting preferred. • Exceptional organizational, communication, and time management skills • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within cross-functional teams • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, primarily Excel and OneDrive • Attention to detail while processing large volumes of data

Application Requirements: • U.S. citizen with the ability to pass a background check and obtain a Security Clearance • Possess a current and valid state driver’s license • Residence in the Monterey area • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English proficiently • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills • Must be able to lift and carry light loads without encountering any physical limitations


Bachelor's degree


• Experience with/knowledge of US Government DoD contracting • Experience supporting senior-level executives and government staff • Experience supporting graduate-level education


Ability to obtain a Security Clearance

Salary Range

Salary Range: $40,000 to $60,000
